New York License Plates

Fees for Standard New York License Plates

When you first register your vehicle, you'll receive 2 license plates for passenger vehicles and 1 plate for motorcycles or mopeds. The fees for New York State are as follows:

Passenger Vehicles (cars, trucks, vans): $25

Motorcycles: $12.50

Title Certificate: $50

Other fees may include sales tax, county use tax, and a 6-plus cylinder or electric vehicle fee. 

If your plates are ever stolen, notify the police and file a police report. You can then bring the report to a DMV office to surrender the vehicle registration. Read more about the process for lost, stolen or destroyed plates here. 

Specialty & Custom Vanity Plates

There are many specialty plates available in New York and you may be able customize the license tag number.  What is often called a vanity plate is a "Custom" or "Personalized" license plate in New York.  The initial fees for these plates range from $31.25 to $75.
